Review by Chris Carter

Overall

Gretsch is back. In the 60's and 70's I prefered Rogers, Slingerland, Gretsch in that order. In the 80's and 90's Pearl, Yamaha. Now Gretsch has done some work to pull ahead. These are off-shore shells(HKS)but the quality and fit and finish is A+. They look amazing and the limited edition (Only 100 kits made in Walnut!) makes them a valuable commodity.

Sound

The clincher is the sound of the solid walnut. Gutsy, ballsy with pure tone definition and great attack. I recorded direct to disk using PD series drum mics dry and the sound blew everyone away. No effects needed. They tune so nice it's easy to get a nice round fundamental on each drum. The only kit I've ever heard to rival the Yamaha Recording series birch shells for pure tone but the walnut blows away the birch for power.

Look

They are stunning on stage. Everyone comments even non-drummers.

Feel

Feel is solid quality.

Reliability

So far so good. The hardware is all heavy build and deep chrome. Feels like it will last forever.

Other Comments

I think I'll keep these drums forever. I always regreted selling my small Rogers be-bop kit which was very special in sound and quality. These are at that same level. I might get a Gretsch USA maple kit in the be-bop sizes for a jazz kit.

Overall

Ok I know I paid more than new price BUT you hear these drums and you know why. Awesome! You never see the walnuts partly 'cause they only made 100 kits but also 'cause whoever has them is holding on to them. I looked for a year finally found them in NYC! All I can say is if you see these rare babys on the market BUY THEM QUICK.

Sound

Think power of maple+ only with birch focus. Big round tone. Versatile- Great with Evans EC2 clears or Remo Pinstripe clears for big mic attack or coated ambassadors for more traditional jazz. Like they say "That Great Gretsch Sound"

Look

The natural clear gloss finish really shows off the Walnut woodgrain. Gorgeous.

Feel

Heavy chrome hardware, Everything is Solid Quality Quality Quality

Reliability

Bullit proof

Value

only 100 made-unique sound- unique looks- Top quality build-They can only go up in value

Other Comments

Gretsch high end drums are worth the wait and the $$

Overall

Everything about this kit is what I expected and 100% more. The best quality, very versitile, sheer power and tone.

Sound

Out of this world, and can adopt for every style of music.

Look

Fantastic on Stage with the Rack. Very dominating.

Feel

Excellent. Fantastic to play.

Reliability

Nothing's gone wrong yet and I don't think it will cause of the Gretsch quality.

Value

Not a bad price for what I got, and cause it's a rare kit like old Gretsch drums they should only go up in value. If you see any for sale get them quick. One things for sure I won't be getting rid of mine.
