Review by Ryan

Overall

Anyone looking for a bass to play night after night, in smokey bars or crowded mosh pits will love this bass. It's more affordable than the American Series, with just as much tone and comfort. A great bass for the price range, and for any level of expierence.

Sound

I usually play with the neck pickup up all the way, and the bridge and tone knobs rolled back about half. The result is a very smooth, yet still snappy sound. I usually use a pick, (being a guitarist for ten years prior to being a bassist, a pick seems more natural to me), and I get a good punch out of the instrument. I like the way it sounds using fingerstyle even better, though I think someone more adept at the style could do it more justice than I. For any light-to-medium heavy style of music, this bass delivers where some sound too dominating. You might want active pickups for anything super heavy.

Look

My biggest complaint is the fact that it only comes in black. It is a nice looking instrument, and the binding on the neck adds a lot of class, but I would definitly prefer a couple of other options. I'd definitly like to see a natural finish, or three color burst on this bass.

Feel

VERY thin neck. Switching from guitar was much more comfortable because of this, so anyone doing the same should check this bass out. The contours are great, as per usual Fenders. Very comfy standing up and sitting down. Everything feels very simple and natural, which I prefer over instruments with more knobs than a your local pawnshop.

Reliability

Very solid, simple layout. You'd have to be an idiot to really fuck this thing up. I think the only other thing I'd like to see is a bottom/rear input. When you're onstage, I find the quarter ince sticking out of the front of the bass can get in the way, or even get yanked out if your playing really hard. That just may be a preference, though.

Value

Best bang for your buck. This may not be everyone's dream bass, but if you want a solid, working-man's bass that sounds good, plays good, and isn't going to cost you too much, this is your bass.

Overall

I agree with Ryan that this bass is a lot of bang for the buck. Though I don't own one, I've played several and have always been impressed with the feel. Love the neck- it's a reissue of the old style vintage necks of the 60's.

Sound

Solid.

Look

I also agree with Ryan that it needs more color options. Black is a bore! I'd like a white one actually!

Feel

Great. Easy to play.

Reliability

Can't say, as I don't own one.

Value

Big bang for the buck! Plays as well as the US models, only this is a Japanese model so you save some dough.

Other Comments

I can live without Geddy Lee, but I like this bass!

Overall

The Geddy Lee Jazz bass is (for the money) a fine instrument. Great tone & very playable.

Sound

The tone is much more mature then my active bass and is as good as the American Jazz basses

Look

It's a Artist model. If it came in green or sunburst it would not be a Geddy Lee signature bass.

Feel

The Fender "C" style neck is thin and fast. This is what sold me on this bass.

Reliability

I have only had it about three weeks. I'll get back with you on this one.

Value

Compared to the price for an American Jazz, This bass is worth every dollor.

Other Comments

Doesn't come with a case. What up with that?

Review by Steve-o Bassman

Overall

Good bass, but not great. I believe the American Standard version is a better overall value. Why spend this much money on a bass that is Japanese and does not come with a good case, when for a few bucks more you can get a better bass in the 2008 American Standard? Get a black one with a maple neck and it looks practically the same just no Geddy Lee name. The neck on the American Standard is a satin smoother finish too. Bridge is upgraded on the Americian Standard and provides better sustain and thump than the BadAss. The tuning key hardware on the Geddy Lee is not as good and makes the neck heavy compared to the American Standard.

Sound

Good but the American Standard has killer sound and balanced tone.

Look

Great look.

Feel

Very solid and balanced instrument, but neck heavy.

Reliability

It is a Fender

Value

Save a few more dollars and get the 2008 American Standard.

Other Comments

Nothing wrong with this instrument, but know that the American will retain it's value, has better hardware, and balance/feel. If you HAVE to have the Geddy Lee name, then this is the sizchel! If you are going to get one, there are plenty of cheaper lightly used ones on eBay - DO NOT buy this new IMO.
