Overall

I am really enjoying this bass. Everything about it is great, it sounds great and it feels great...it's great. They should call it the Fender Great Gatsby bass because it is that great.

Review by Mikel Smith

Overall

Quality and workmanship excellent. Played great right out of the box.

Sound

Nice tone, stays in tune very well, sounds great when playing with a group without any amplification.

Look

Fit and finish excellent, great looking instrument. Hardware and trim 1st class.

Feel

Nice balance, neck size is very comfortable, even above 5th fret.

Reliability

Been playing this one for about 7 months now, no cracks or loosening of parts, all I've had to do is tune the thing, was set up very good right out of the box.

Value

Can't imagine a better deal for the money........

Overall

This is the new Grand Acoustic series from Fender. I fell in love with it the first time I laid my eyes on it, but the price of $500 prevented me from buying it instantly. I read reviews that Fender acoustics are overpriced. After reading many positive reviews (including from this website) about it, I thought I'd give it a try. I am not disappointed. This bass has everything I want in a bass: deep hollow body, 34" scale, classic color and finish. It is rather heavy, though, and can hardly stay on my shoulder. But it gives me the feel of authority. My only complaint is that it is a cutaway. I'd certainly buy the non cutaway version should Fender make one. Maybe then I'll give it a 5.

Sound

Acoustically, it is bright for such a big body. Perhaps it was because of the cutaway. I wish the sound were deeper and darker. I played it unplugged with my wife on the piano, and it prevails against the onslaught of her Yamaha. The deep body creates enough resonance to "fight back" the sound of the piano. I am very happy with it.

Plugging in is where the fun starts. I can create virtually any sound I want. My favorite is to push the bass all the way up, kill-off the middle, and set the treble at one-third. It creates a haunting sound that is perfect to accompany my wife's "Moonlight Sonata". Great job by Fishman. Definitely a 5.

Look

Hands down, the most beautiful bass I've ever seen. I'm not a big fan of cutaway, but even I love the way it curves. Musical instruments are not supposed to be judged by looks. But if your gear is beautiful, you'll be proud to be spotted with it in public, and want to spend a lot of time with it. Just like your sig'n others.

Feel

It's a tradeoff between comfort and sound volume. Bigger body means bigger volume, but it's less comfortable. I've played Fender's Victor Bailey signature bass as well as Martin B-1 and Breedlove Atlas. While Victor is more comfortable to play, the unplugged volume is nowhere near my GB41. Martin B-1 produces louder sound unplugged and just as comfortable. The Atlas is bigger but produces about the same volume as my GB41.

Reliability

I am a structural engineer, so I am very picky about structural integrity. In my opinion, Fender offers one of the most durable instruments in the market. The construction is very good. I can understand that thinner body vibrates more, but what's the point of having a stellar instrument that won't stand a long time? My first guitar is a no-name brand which withstands 25 years of abuse and irresponsibility. I can see that quality in my GB41.

Value

An excellent value for beginner to intermediate player. If somebody stole it, I would hunt it down and beat the crap out of the thief with it.

My only wish is that it were a non-cutaway rosewood ABG. I like deep dark sound (like Beethoven), and this bass gives me a bright sound like Mozart. All in all, 9/10.
